I'm a big fan of throwing surprise parties. Last year my Mom and I spent six months planning a surprise party for my Dad for his 60th birthday. My sweet husband, Marty, remarked that no one in his family had ever thrown a surprise party. I suggested we change that.
This weekend we surprised my mother-in-law, Carolyn, with a Surprise 65th/Retirement Party. Since most of Marty's family lives in Western Kentucky, we enlisted his sister to organize the event and his cousin did the decorating.
The orchestrating of such an honorable deception as a surprise party does not phase my naturally sneaky mind. I didn't anticipate the nervous tension it would create for the key players new to the surprise game. They had to get Carolyn to the opposite side of town than she thought she was going at a time when she'd made other plans for herself. It almost fell apart. Stomachs churned with butterflies. Nails were bitten. And, I understood what Marty meant when he said they'd never done anything like this before.
But, alas, she was surprised!
And, Marty's present to his Mom was a mini-concert:
Happy birthday, Carolyn. Thanks to all the sweet people who made this possible for her. Welcome to the world of surprise!
